2nd Grade Swim for Life Program

About the Program

From the NYC Parks / NYC Department of Education parent packet.

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation in collaboration with the Office of Fitness & Health Education (OF&HE) have again sponsored the “Swim for Life” program. The focus of the program is to teach second grade students basic aquatic skills. Achieving competency in and around water can result in a number of positive outcomes:

  • Save children’s lives
  • Enhance their enjoyment of water activities
  • Provide a means to improve their overall fitness
  • Build self-awareness through the mastery of a life skill

We are targeting second grade students for participation in one of the three ten-week sessions given in a school year. The program operates during the school day and each child will receive weekly aquatic instruction. The program also includes intensive separate “Vacation Camp” sessions. Children who are not participating in the ten week program can register for this weeklong session.

In order to encourage students to practice/enjoy their newly developed skills during OST (Out of School Time), participants will receive free annual youth memberships to Parks sites.
